Zaha Hadid Architects designed a stunning structure that will house a 1.200-seat theater, an art museum, and a science center in Zhuhai, China. Next to Macau’s gambling mecca, Zhuhai Jinwan Civic Art Center will be an opulent structure and the new main point in the area.
Zara Hadid was an architect, artist, and designer and is still recognized as a major figure in 21st-century architecture. Known for her liberated architectural geometry, Hadid was described as “The Queen of Curve”. Her major works include London Aquatics Center, designer for the 2012 Olympics and the Broad Art Museum, and more.
Zhuhai Jinwan Civic Art Center
Named as Zhuhai Jinwan Civic Art Center, the new structure designed by Zaha Hadid Architects features a perforated steel roof that separates into four wings, offering an X-shaped appearance. This amazing building will connect directly to the new Zhuhai Airport Intercity railway, which links several important cities nearby.
Featuring an art museum, a science center, a 1.200-seat theater, and a 500-seat hall, this amazing building was created with the purpose to be “a hub of contemporary creativity” in the area, as said by Zaha Hadid Architects.

Each wing will house one of the four spaces and it will feature its own stepped stroll that descends all to the lake.
The striking rooftop consists of perforated steel panels arranged in a chevron pattern and was inspired by the formation of migratory birds that fly over the region. It was also designed to overhang the adjacent plazas, providing solar shading, one of the many elements with the purpose of reducing the building’s energy consumption, a great sustainable feature added to the Zaha Hadid Architects project.
Also, there will be an internal “intelligent control” energy system that aims to mitigate overuse and sustainable hot-water plan. In order to provide a home for water-filtering flora and fauna, the surrounding lake will also play an eco-friendly role, minimizing storm runoff.
The lake will also be introduced as part of the landscaping for the center, which has been developed to align with Zhuhai’s “sponge city” initiative. Sponge cities are being developed in urban areas throughout China to help mitigate flooding, water pollution, and water scarcity.
Once complete, the Zhuhai Jinwan Civic Art Centre will measure 170 meters in width and 270 meters in length, from north to south. Inside, the interior design for each of the center’s four wings will be unique, which Zaha Hadid Architects says is to ensure “the most engaging visitor experiences”.
Zaha Hadid Architects will complete the Zhuhai Jinwan Civic Art Centre with a rooftop piazza, alongside an external amphitheater on its west side that will be dedicated to outdoor performances and activities.
The Zhuhai Jinwan Civic Art Centre is the latest in various projects being developed by the Zaha Hadid Architects across the country of China, following the reveal of proposals for a pair of skyscrapers in Shenzhen, the Xi’an International Football Centre, and Shanghai’s “greenest building”.
