”Supporting the next generation of creative professionals is something we care deeply about,” says Katharina C. Hamma, Chief Operating Officer of Koelnmesse, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Pure Talents Contest.

“Young designers are immensely important for the interior design industry because they are synonymous with new inspiration, creativity and innovations. Many IMM Cologneexhibitors follow the Pure Talents Contest closely and are actively involved in career planning — they open up their collections to young designers to provide them with their first experiences of professional design work. And as a trade fair organiser, we are delighted to be able to support these up-and-coming talents at the start of their careers.”

Inspired by the Sun: Gradient by Sofia Souidi

The core concept of this project is the replication of the Sun’s behaviour. About 90% of our daily routines happen indoors, with little to none natural light. Although the daylight’s intensity can be replicated through LED technology, the Sun has its own pattern of behaviours. It changes its colour and intensity, depending on its position, weather and the architecture of the place we’re in. That’s the main idea behind Gradient, to mimic such behaviours. Gradient aims to be the bridge between outdoors and indoors.

When asked about what meant to her to appear at IMM Cologne 2018Sofia Soudi answered: ”It is an amazing opportunity to present my work to a large and international audience, and I’m really looking forward to talking with visitors and the other exhibitors.”

I usually get good ideas when I’m travelling or just after visiting exhibitions.

Practical, easy to store and transportation friendly. The Fold It work table was thought to handle all circumstances.  Even though it was originally thought to be student-friendly, the concept can easily be used in multiple work scenarios. If one needs to transport it to somewhere else rather than its original location, Fold It can be collapsed onto a minimum volume. Its simple design was thought to be easy to assemble and to disassemble, without requiring any sort of tools for the job.

When asked what it meant to him to appear at the IMM Cologne 2018, Bucher said: ”It will be an important initial learning experience for establishing contacts and to see the world beyond the university.”. As for Kim, the designer answered ”It means a lot to me. On the one hand, it is recognition of the fact that we have put in a lot of effort in one semester. On the other hand, it facilitates the next step.” Finally, Arends said ”Being there means a lot to me. I’m hoping to get plenty of feedback, to learn new things and to have some interesting encounters.”

I don’t have any special role models – I tend to gather inspiration randomly and spontaneously. – Alissa Arends on if she has any role models.
